Getting the Gig Audition Tips for Musicians Suzy S. Preparing for an upcoming audition? It’s a competitive world out there! To get a leg up, check out these helpful audition tips from Tao G., who teaches music theory, trombone, and guitar lessons in New York City: Work in the music industry is drying up due to lack of funds, a generational shift of interest away from live classical music, and the evolution of music taste to an industry that places more importance on being a dramatic public figure than being a good musician. Broadway shows aren’t willing to pay 30-piece orchestras when they can get away with pressing play on an MP3. Symphony orchestras are going bankrupt because their audience is literally aging out. Established performers are hanging on to their job until they retire. All these factors are creating a bottleneck of resistance for many young musicians looking to make a living playing music. Consequently, young musicians may find themselves unsure how to break into the business. I’m speaking mainly of orchestral, jazz, and commercial work. But this also applies to any musician trying to get a gig with big bands like the Glenn Miller Orchestra, cruise ships, television and film soundtracks, military bands like the President’s Own, Broadway and other major productions like Cirque du Soleil, musical theater touring, theme parks like the Disney Bands, solo recording, and so forth. So here are some general audition tips I’ve accumulated through my experience. This information is of course intended as a helpful guideline and should be supplemented with lessons through a private instructor. Master your instrument. This means practicing often, working on the basics of your instrument and attacking your weaknesses. Don’t always play what you are good at. Well-rounded musicians find more success than one-trick ponies. Your ability to speak through your instrument should be as comfortable as speaking your native language. Know who and what you are auditioning for. This is somewhat self-explanatory, but is extremely important in this context. Orchestral auditions, for example, are intense ordeals that require your absolute finest preparation and attention to detail. But the auditioning panel in Chicago will want something different than the New York Philharmonic. Listen to recordings of the group you want to join so you know what sound they want to hear, and get to know your musical director’s style. Mock-audition for others first. Play your materials for family, friends, pets, neighbors, and certainly other musicians. Get rid of performance anxiety by getting comfortable playing with other people listening intently. Also, listen to recordings of yourself. You never can believe how sloppy you sound until you put a microphone in front of yourself and listen back! But that helps build finesse and precision. Let them talk. Ours is an industry that stands on the bitter truths of criticism; from other musicians, critics, teachers, and consumers. However, it’s not always a bad thing to learn that you have a deficiency in one area or another, because that knowledge can help you focus your practice. Young musicians, especially college students, are extremely susceptible to harsh criticism. Always believe in yourself, and remember that even Miles Davis had critics. Love what you do. If you want to play jazz trombone, become the smartest person you know about jazz trombone. Get every recording of J J Johnson and his contemporaries, then listen to modern trombonists like Marshall Gilkes. Transcribe everything you hear. Go to jazz clubs. Learn the language of jazz musicians, because when you finally do get in with those cats, you want to be able to keep up so you get another gig with them. The important point of this is that you should be excited about what you do, with music as in life in general. It should make you happy to work hard for what you want. Like I said, these audition tips are general in nature and the best advice I can put together from my experience getting through and winning auditions myself. I would encourage you to also research on your own the methods of great players that have done what you want to get into. For trombonists in particular, check out tromboneforum.org for a whole community of players to gain knowledge from. Similar websites and communities exist for other instrumentalists like cello.org and trumpetherald.com, for cellists and trumpeters, respectfully. And finally, advice on surviving the day of your audition starts with the night before: Get plenty of sleep! Stay away from caffeine the day of to reduce unintentional tremors. Give yourself a healthy amount of time before the audition to travel to the location, sign in, and then set up your instrument. Don’t do something different on this day; practice as you always do, for this creates a sense of familiarity and comfort that aids in reducing anxiety. Try not to chat up your peers as many people need some privacy before auditioning and may find your chattiness to be rude. Find a water fountain and take a little walk to it every 10 minutes or so. The water is good for keeping you alert and hydrated, and the walk will let you work out some of the uneasiness of waiting. Don’t overplay! Warm up and then put the horn down. You want your embouchure/hands/head fresh but settled into playing “shape” when your name is called. Breathe! Take deep, purposeful breaths while playing as nervousness tends to lead people to taking quick, short breaths which could lead to phrases losing their intensity or dying altogether before their intended duration. The rest is up to you, your preparation, and the will of the panel. Listen to their instructions and do your best to comply quickly but purposefully. And when it’s all over, I suggest getting a transcript of the judge’s notes so you can study the things they didn’t like and use it to improve for the next audition. We only want to introduce exceptions to the rule that indicate noun ending changes in the face of gender.The Rule: for most adjectives e nding in -eur or -eux, you must change that ending to -euse  if the noun it must agree with is feminine.Heureux = heureuse; Affreux = affreuse; Peureux = peureuseThe Exception: adjectives that end in -teur.The T before -eur causes the feminine form to become -riceActeur = actrice; conservateur = conservatriceOddly enough, the word interpreteur does not have a female form! So, if your job consists of real time translation of dialogue and you are female, this is one profession that accords you a male job title!Let us now suppose you are describing two objects, one masculine and one feminine, that are both white.The Rule: gender confusion is to be avoided at all cost.You would say:Une chemise blanche â€" a white shirtUn chandail blanc â€" a white jumperWhat if you wanted to talk about both garments in the same sentence?The Exception: it is perfectly acceptable to combine opposite gender objects in the same sentence, provided you remember that the masculine gender prevails:Des chemises et chandails blancs.Please note that the article has been changed to plural to suit the fact that there is more than one object being described, and the ending of blanc has been treated to an additional S, to reflect the plural.As noted in the sample sentence above, certain colours have both a masculine and feminine form. Source: Pixabay Credit: GeraltFinal Note on Grammatical GenderSurely, in your French language course, you've had it hammered home, most likely with a vengeance, that every single noun in the language is assigned to a gender, even uncountable nouns such as soap (masculine) and air (feminine).The same would hold true were you to study Spanish, or learn Italian!Concepts are generally free from this burden of designation... generally!The Exceptions:La jalousie â€" English speakers would never say the jealousy... well, maybe as a slang phrase.L'amour: yes we can feel the love â€" again, popular vernacular that is not considered proper English.La fainéantise â€" have you ever been stricken by the laziness?We didn't think so.The Mute versus Aspired HThe letter H is rather exacting in French expressions, the general rule being that it is silent.The trouble comes in when using contractions: sometimes H acts like a vowel and is so treated, and sometimes not.Consider these French nouns that all start with what is called the mute H:homme â€" l'homme â€" les hommeshôtel â€" l'hôtel â€" les hôtelshiver â€" l'hiver â€" les hi vershumeur â€" l'humeur â€" les humeurshuile â€" l'huile â€" les huileshygiène â€" l'hygiène Not only does the definite article contract as though the H were not present at all, but they connect as though the H were a vowel: lay zhum (les hommes), for example.Now, let us look at a word or two that start with H, in which that letter is treated as a consonant:le haillonla hainela haltele hamburger â€" I just had to throw that one in there!The article for each of these words is treated as separate; no liaison  possible because the words in question start with a consonant.Keep in mind that, in all cases, the H is not spoken in proper French pronunciation! Having a Cow...When I was younger, not quite so familiar with French speaking, or rules like the mute versus aspired H, I always wo ndered what a beu was and why it was perpetually angry.Only later did I learn that my mother, a native speaker of French, was talking about minced beef, using that mute H: boeuf haché came out as beu faché!Let this anecdote serve as a lesson to you, beginner or intermediate learner of French: learn to distinguish French speech patterns, so that you can tell a noun and its adjective apart!The OE Vowel CombinationYou'll note in the above sentence that the French word  meaning beef has an extra, unspoken vowel: the O.That was not a typo, I assure you!As you study French, you will discover 7 common words in the francophone language that are spelled with this linguistic ligature, as such things are called.However, when those French words are pronounced, they sound just like words written without those bound vowels!The vowel sound in words such as heure and peur are equivalent to the one in soeur and coeur.It is tempting to think of any word with the oe vowel combination as one that wou ld make the eu sound, but in the case of moelleux, that rule does not apply.Moelleux is an exception to the next rule:For other vocab containing oe, such as poêle and poésie, you'll note the accent placed on the E, which indicates it is a syllable onto itself.Fortunately, we Brits are somewhat attuned to the oe combination because some of our words still have it. Conditional is sometimes considered finite, as well.The three non-finites are infinitive, past participle and present participle, in case you were wondering.While studying your French course, and even if you learn  French online, you will surely not encounter too many grammar rule exceptions.That is because there aren't that many!Our recommendation of the best way to learn French would be:Learn expressions, words and phrases without too much focus on what you shouldn't do or say when you speak French.2. How can you help your child when it comes to homework? Helping your child with their homework doesn’t mean doing it for them! Here are our 5 top homework tips for parents. 5 Top Homework Tips for Parents   The time and the place Establish a structured routine, and designated place for your child to do their homework. Free from distractions, such as the TV, their phone and their siblings! You’ll know which time would work best for your child. Most children are more productive earlier in the evening, and not too close to bedtime. Some children like to have a break and a snack before hitting the books after school, others prefer to get homework out of the way first and relax after. Either way, ensure you schedule a regular time. Even siblings who are the best of friends will distract each other. If you have more than one child, we suggest trying to find a homework space for each of your children. Also, try to ensure if one child were to finish their homework before the other, to encourage quiet time, reading/playing quietly - as to not distract their sibling who is still working away. Set an example Demonstrate to your child that homework is very much part of adult life too! When your child sits down to do their homework, you could also sit and read a book or work on your accounts. This will help to normalise the process of homework, your child will then see that everyone does it!, and that they aren’t being singled. Offer guidance, not the answers! Try to avoid giving your child the answer, as then they won’t fully understand the material, and this could set your child back in class. It could also prevent your child from developing independent, lifelong learning skills. However it is a great idea to speak to your child about their homework. The reason is that an awkward phrasing is not necessarily incorrect. It is, well, awkward. As such, unless the awkward phrase is really jarring or really common, I usually let it slide. Anyway, it is sometimes difficult to know what exactly is meant by phrases such as, according to my memory, he proposed to me, a car that is a gift, my big parents house, and it hurt my heart. The Virtual Writing Tutor grammar checker is, after all, a machine. It doesnt understand you. It merely scans your sentences for patterns in its database of error definitions. It dont want it to misinterpret what you have written and give you bad feedback. However, here are a few awkward phrasings I couldnt let slide. You must admit, some readers would be left scratching their heads by these surprising sentences. According  to  me/my  memory AWKWARD:   According to me, the best way to get downtown is to take the train.BETTER:   In  my  opinion, the best way to get downtown is to take the train. AWKWARD:   According to my memory, my most spectacular success has to be back when I was 10 years old and I won a sword fighting championship.BETTER:   When I think back on my life, my most spectacular success has to be back when I was 10 years old and I won a sword fighting championship. EXPLANATION:    The phrase According  to  X means If what X says is true. It is strange to doubt the truth of ones own memories. You may often suspect that you have forgotten one or more details, but only mentally deranged people have memories of things that never happened. If you are concerned that you might have might have remembered a detail incorrectly, you can say, If memory serves  me  well or If I am not mistaken. When you say according to me, you sound crazy. Proposed  to  me AWKWARD:   While I was walking, I saw my friend and he proposed to me to embark in his car.BETTER:   While I was walking, I saw my friend and he proposed that I embark in his car. BETTER  STILL:   While I was walking, I saw my friend and he invited  me  to get in his car. EXPLANATION:    The most common context in which we use the phrase he  proposed  to  me is when we wish to say he proposed that we get married. It sounds very formal. Otherwise, companies might propose solutions, as in, my company had  proposed  to  me  that I could come back to work after having the baby which you can find in the BNC-COCA corpus here. In any case, the phrase he proposed to me sounds overly formal for most contexts. A new car that is gift AWKWARD:   She got a new car that is gift from her parents.BETTER:   She got a new car as a gift from her parents. AWKWARD:   Sarah got a job that is nurse.BETTER:   Sarah got a job as a nurse. EXPLANATION:    A relative clause following that helps us identify which one is being discussed. You might say, I bought the dress that was on sale. It tell us, not any dress but a specific dress. Since we already know in our example sentence that she got a car, we dont need to ask Which car? We already know. Rather, what we want to know is why she got the car or how she got it. In such a case, as a gift tells us more useful information. Similarly, we know in our second example that Sarah got a job. Which job is obvious. It is the job that Sarah got. What we want to know is what kind of job. A job as a nurse provides the information we dont already know. My big parents house AWKWARD:   I went to my big parents house early in the morning.BETTER:   I went to my eldest uncles house early in the morning. EXPLANATION:    Only a Korean or somebody who is familiar with Korean culture would understand what a big parent or a big father or a big house is. English does not have a word for the patriarchal head of the family in this way, so you must specify that you are referring to your fathers eldest brother when you write in English. Otherwise, it sounds awkward. It hurt my heart AWKWARD:   When I saw the dogs in their cages, it hurt my heart. BETTER:   When I saw the dogs in their cages, it made my heart ache. EXPLANATION:    While the meaning will be clear to most readers, it hurt my heart is not a common expression in English for the emotional pain we feel when we see something sad or pitiable.
